Dublin

Case studies & Solutions

Introduction

Dublin is the capital and most populous city of Ireland. Similar to the cities of Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford—Dublin is administered separately from its respectiveCounty with its own City Council. The city is listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city, with a ranking of "Alpha-", placing Dublin among the top 30 cities in the world. It is a historical and contemporary cultural centre for the country, as well as a modern centre of education, the arts, administration, economy, and industry.

What are the major challenges?

Urban regeneration is a high priority for Dublin City Council (DCC), and some of the challenges DCC faces are in the areas of novel and collaborative approaches to urban regeneration. The biggest challenge has been the rapid growth of Dublin City and environs during the 'Celtic Tiger' years, and the ensuing collapse in the fortunes of the Irish economy in recent years. This has placed downward financial pressures as well as upward community pressures on DCC. Issues such as transport, water supply, household charges, waste management, planning, innovation and employment: all have complex and dynamic aspects for DCC. Building resilient solutions will be a huge challenge but also a huge opportunity for the City of Dublin.

How TURAS is helping?

Dublin City Council (DCC) is a Local Authority in Dublin, Ireland. As one of four city authorities for the Dublin region, we manage the central city area. DCC is a sustainability-aware local authority (we have just launched our sustainability reporting mechanism) and our Draft City Development Plan is compatible with the TURaS objectives). We manage a number of regeneration projects and are the planning authority for our functional area. TURAS will help DCC to build more sustainable planning and management policies, with special regard to areas that have been rapidly changed during the recent economic boom, and in relation to how we deal with areas that have become abandoned due to the collapse in the Irish economy.
